Happy Youth Art Month!

What is Youth Art Month?
Youth Art Month is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs.

Youth Art Month was created in 1961 by ACMI, a non-profit association of art and craft materials manufacturers, in cooperation with the NAEA.  In 1984, ACMI created CFAE to administer the national Youth Art Month program and encourage funding for the program.  Current members of the Council include: ACMI, which provides all administrative support and the majority of funding for national Youth Art Month;  NAEA, whose members carry out local Youth Art Month activities and whose state affiliates help fund state Youth Art Month programs;  The SHIP, a group of art materials exhibitors at the annual NAEA Convention;  and the General Federation of Women's Clubs, a volunteer women's organization dedicated to community improvement through volunteer service. Other involved organizations include the Association of Crafts & Creative Industries, Hobby Industries Association, and National Art Materials Trade Association.

How Do I Get Involved in Youth Art Month in My Community?
Anyone can start an observance.  In most local areas, art educators organize observances and seek the support and help of others in their schools and community, including businesspeople, other art teachers, parents, librarians, youth organization leaders, and others who have a genuine concern for quality art programs and who are willing to work with others in the school system or community.

Exhibitions at PAM

Mark Rothko

FEB 18 – MAY 27, 2012

Regarded as one of the leading American artists of the 20th century, Mark Rothko (1903-1970) began his life in art as Marcus Rothkowitz in Portland, Ore. Having emigrated from Russia as a 10-year-old with his mother and older sister in 1913 to join his father and brothers in Portland, Rothko attended Lincoln High School and took his first art classes at the Museum Art School before going off to Yale, New York City, and beyond. This exhibition celebrates a native son whose lyrical paintings created a legacy for the world.

The second in the Museum’s yearlong series of major installation works by important postwar figures, Joseph Beuys features the monumental environmental work, Blitzschlag mit Lichtschein auf Hirsch (Lightning with Stag in its Glare), 1958-1985, along with selected multiples that extend the installation’s conceptual framework.

Doodle for Google!

Right now, Google is hosting Doodle 4 Google, which is an art competition that challenges students to redesign our Google logo, with a doodle based on the theme: "If I could travel in time, I'd visit..."

The national winner takes home a $30,000 college scholarship and awards his school with a $50,000 technology grant. In addition, the winning "Doodle" will also be displayed on Google's homepage, Crayola's iconic 64 box, and even be displayed in a special exhibit at the New York Public Library.

In addition, we also have a limited number of Submission kits that we can provide to help some of your schools hold their own Doodle activity. Please let me know if you have any schools that would be interested so that I can send a kit for them. The kit includes Entry Forms, Crayola Crayons, Markers, and Map Pencils.

Below are a couple links to help you learn more about Doodle 4 Google and to meet Matteo Lopez, the 2011 Doodle 4 Google National Winner.
